Research Summary:

The Clean Water Act requires states to list water bodies that fail to meet water-quality standards. Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) have to be developed for these water-quality impaired water bodies. A TMDL represents the allowable load of a pollutant that a water body can receive without exceeding water-quality standards. We collected water-quality data from 42 streams (within the Lower Arkansas, Cottonwood, Neosho, Verdigris, Cimarron, and Walnut Basins) and 4 reservoirs (Pomona, John Redmond, Council Grove, and El Dorado Reservoirs) for possible use in developing TMDLs. Some assessed water-quality parameters included nutrients, chlorophyll a, herbicides, dissolved oxygen concentration, pH, total suspended solids, and bacteria.
