Research support 2024

Pie chart showing breakdown of research funding: Federal 86.5 percent, Kansas and other states 6.3 percent, non-profile 5 percent, for-profit 2.2 percent

Our research mission is accomplished by the efforts of 21 scientists, research professors and associate/senior researchers who seek external funding to support postdoctoral researchers, technicians and students.

In 2024, these investigators worked on 65 externally funded research grants, published 59 articles in peer-reviewed journals and added eight Kansas Biological Survey reports to our series, which now totals 220.

Some of our current research projects include:

  • predicting future ecosystems based on the forests and grasslands of today;
  • using silflower, a native prairie plant, as a test case toward more nature-based agriculture;
  • applying remote sensing to track agricultural yields across Kansas and nationwide;
  • restoring plant communities and soil health with fungi;
  • studying how different plant communities influence soil carbon;
  • quantifying harmful algal blooms in Kansas reservoirs; and
  • adding ethnobotanical information to national plant databases.
