Research Summary:

Large numbers of Echinacea angustifolia plants are harvested from the wild in Kansas and across the Great Plains every year. This widespread harvesting for the herbal product trade has led to concern about population pressure on this and other Echinacea species. In collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service, state Natural Heritage Programs, and United Plant Savers, the researchers conducted a range-wide conservation assessment of all species of Echinacea in the U.S. and Canada. This study, funded by the U.S. Forest Service, surveyed existing data and literature and collected baseline data in order to make recommendations for conservation and future monitoring of these species on federal, state, and other lands.
