Research Summary:

The primary objectives of the study were to: 1) to gather baseline data about the location, status, and physical and biological attributes of reference wetlands in the 790-mile-long floodplain of the lower Missouri River, 2) to identify the dominant plant communities in lacustrine and non-woody palustrine wetlands in the study area and estimate benchmark ecological conditions at each site using Floristic Quality Assessment protocols, 3) to gather nutrient, chlorophyll a, turbidity, and macroinvertebrate data from reference wetlands and make these data available to scientists in the Central Plains for use in developing nutrient benchmark values for lakes, reservoirs, streams, rivers and wetlands, 4) to relate nutrient concentrations, macroinvertebrate data, wetland buffer land use, and other environmental factors to general wetland health as indicated by Floristic Quality Assessment scores. This is Phase 1 of a 2 part study that continued in 2008.
